Kashi Yatra

काशी यात्रा

The rite

Kashi yatra is the playful pre-wedding ritual where the groom pretends to leave for Kashi until the bride’s side persuades him to marry. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma conducts the North Indian version at home or a small hall in Bengaluru, with the coconut, umbrella, and dakshina exchange explained step by step for both families.

Before the visit, clear a clean floor or table space, stack samagri from the WhatsApp list in one place, and keep drinking water ready for elders. Share gate code, parking notes, and society rules when you message so setup is calm across Bengaluru traffic.

Time at the house: 1–2 hours

Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma does this at the house in Bengaluru. The fee is not printed on this page. It is sent on WhatsApp with the material list.

Why families book it

It lightens wedding-week nerves while keeping the traditional banter between maternal uncle and groom.

Useful when younger cousins have never seen the custom and need clear cues in Hindi.

Elders and children may sit nearby; the pandit pauses for brief Hindi notes so guests know when to offer flowers, ghee, or responses during mantras.

Share gotra, names, and your Bengaluru locality on WhatsApp so travel and samagri are confirmed before the day. The appointment form opens WhatsApp only; this page does not store your message.

When families ask

  • On the morning or afternoon before the wedding, as the family schedule allows
  • When the maternal uncle (mama) is present to play his role
  • When the wedding is in Bengaluru and families want the ritual at home first
  • When both sides want one pandit to align Hindi cues with the baraat plan
  • When you want the rite completed in one calm sitting without rushing the final arati and prasad

Short vidhi

  1. Ganesh invocation and sankalp for the wedding house
  2. Groom dressed in simple yatra clothes with umbrella and stick props
  3. Mama blocks the path and offers the wedding proposal
  4. Coconut and token dakshina exchange
  5. Groom agrees and returns to wedding dress or next ceremony
  6. Short blessing for the couple and elders
  7. Aarti if the family keeps a small altar

The pandit confirms the order on WhatsApp before the visit.

  • Coconut, betel leaves, and dry fruits for offering
  • Roli, rice, and flowers

Questions

Must this be on the exact wedding muhurat?

Usually the day before or same morning; confirm with your wedding planner on WhatsApp.

Can we skip props?

Minimal props work; tell the pandit what you have at home.

Hall or flat?

Both work if mama and groom can walk a short distance indoors.

Is this the same as tilak?

No. Kashi yatra is the mock pilgrimage; tilak is the groom acceptance ritual.

Mixed-language families?

Brief Hindi explanations can be added for guests who do not know the custom.

Photography during banter?

Yes, when it does not block the exchange steps.
