Chhath In City
What this guide covers
Chhath is a four-day vrata centred on Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya, with arghya offered at sunrise and sunset. In Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh the evening arghya is often at a river ghat. In Bengaluru most families do not have a village pond at the doorstep. This guide is about keeping the vrata at home or at a safe water edge without treating the city like a mela ground.
Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma helps North Indian families plan the puja steps and timing. The vrat itself is observed by the karwa; the pandit visit is usually for sankalp, story, and guidance on the daily order.
What families ask
- Can we do Chhath on the apartment terrace?
- What if we cannot reach a lake on the fourth day?
- Do we need a separate room for the prasad and thekua?
- Can the husband cook during the vrat when the wife is fasting?
- Is a priest required every day or only at the start?
- How do we manage sunset timing when buildings block the horizon?
Families want clarity on water for arghya, where baskets stand overnight, and how neighbours react to terrace gatherings. Societies vary: some allow small evening groups; others prefer the ground-floor common area or a quiet corner near a tub of clean water.
Duration and samagri notes
The vrata runs four days; the heaviest cooking and fasting days are the middle two. Samagri includes bamboo soop, seasonal fruit, thekua, sugarcane, and clean water vessels. Rice kheer and other prasad items are prepared without onion or garlic for the offering. Duration of a pandit visit for initial puja is typically a few hours, not the whole four days.

At the house in Bengaluru
Many societies allow a quiet terrace arghya if baskets are small and water is contained. Ground-floor homes sometimes use a clean tub on the driveway with a cloth barrier for privacy. The karwa’s fasting rules stay the same; only the water body changes. Families should not block fire exits or common lifts with large groups.
Weather in October or November can be sudden rain. A backup corner near a large window with the soop facing the sky is a practical city compromise when the terrace is wet. Panditji can walk through the order on the first day so relatives who never saw a village Chhath still know when to stay silent.
