Tharpanam (Pitru Tarpanam) at Home
तर्पणम्
The rite
Tharpanam is the offering of sesame-mixed water to pitrus, acknowledging that departed souls are sustained through the devotion of living descendants. In Kerala and Tamil traditions it appears on Amavasya, Karkidaka Vavu, and personal shraddha days, while North Indian families in Bengaluru may use the same term for pitru tarpana. The kartā faces south, holds darbha, and releases water with each ancestral name as mantras are chanted. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma performs tharpanam at your residence with a WhatsApp samagri list sent in advance. The rite is worship at home, not a claim about worldly results.
Time at the house: About 1–2 hours for standard pitru tharpanam
Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma does this at the house in Bengaluru. The fee is not printed on this page. It is sent on WhatsApp with the material list.
Why families book it
You might schedule tharpanam when Amavasya falls on a busy workday but elders insist the offering must not be skipped, or when children are learning pitru karyam for the first time. It is also booked alongside annual tithi when the family wants a focused libation without a long feast.
Tharpanam expresses gratitude and duty toward forefathers. It does not assure removal of doshas or instant peace of mind; grief and faith are personal. The pandit aligns the session with whether your home follows Malayali, Tamil, or North Indian pitru practice.
In Bengaluru apartment communities, families often set aside a quiet corner near a tulsi plant or garden soil for pouring tarpanam water, because kitchen drains are avoided. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma arrives with enough time to help younger kartās learn how to hold darbha and say each pitru name slowly, which reduces anxiety when elders are no longer present to lead. You confirm the visit through the site WhatsApp flow; the page itself does not store names or dates.

Questions
Which direction should the kartā face during tharpanam?
Pitru tarpanam is commonly done facing south with darbha under the knees or on the seat. The pandit sets the layout in your Bengaluru home before starting.
Can tharpanam be done by women?
Rules differ: some lineages allow widows or daughters for certain pitrus; others require a male heir. Describe your family rule when you book.
Is ellu mandatory?
Black sesame is standard in tharpanam water. If supply is short, the priest advises acceptable substitutes before the day.
Do we need a photo of the departed?
Not required. Names and relationship in sankalpa matter more. Photos may be placed nearby if the family wishes.
Can tharpanam happen on the terrace?
A clean, quiet ground-level space is preferred. Terrace is fine if wind and privacy allow water offerings safely.
What happens to the offered water?
It is poured on soil, grass, or a designated corner—not into kitchen sinks. The pandit shows where to pour in your home.
