Samvatsarikam – First Year Ceremony – Brahmins

संवत्सरिकम् (प्रथम वर्ष)

The rite

Samvatsarikam is the first annual shraddha or taddinam observed on the same tithi one year after a person’s passing, especially in South Indian Brahmin families who follow the Apastamba or similar sutra calendar. The ceremony honours the departed, feeds brahmins or family priests, and offers pinda and tarpan at home. North Indian families living in Bengaluru sometimes adapt elements alongside their own shraddha customs; Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma coordinates the order after you share the deceased’s name, tithi, and family tradition on WhatsApp.

Time at the house: 2–3 hours before the meal; longer if homa is added

Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma does this at the house in Bengaluru. The fee is not printed on this page. It is sent on WhatsApp with the material list.

Why families book it

The first year mark is emotionally significant for relatives who want the date observed correctly when travel to the native village is not possible. A home ceremony keeps close family together and allows personalised remembrance.

This is ancestral ritual, not a celebration. The pandit uses respectful language and does not promise liberation or specific afterlife outcomes—only proper observance per the agreed script.

When families ask

  • On the exact tithi completing one year after demise
  • When the family follows annual Brahminical taddinam before monthly masikam rhythm continues
  • If the date falls on a weekday and home observance is chosen over hall rental
  • When combining with a small homa for pitru shanti as family custom allows

Short vidhi

  1. Sankalp naming the departed, gotra, and relationship to yajamanas
  2. Vishwadevata and pitru invocation at the designated space
  3. Tarpan with water, sesame, and darbha as per the chosen paddhati
  4. Pinda daan or symbolic pinda offering as the family’s tradition requires
  5. Brahmin bhojan or family meal with sattvic menu after the ritual hour
  6. Charity of clothes, grains, or dakshina as directed
  7. Concluding shanti mantra and permission for family to resume routine activities
  8. Documentation of date for next year’s remembrance if masikam applies

The pandit confirms the order on WhatsApp before the visit.

Questions

Is this only for Tamil or Telugu Brahmins?

The title reflects a common BMP label. Share your actual sampradaya when booking so mantras and meal rules match.

Can North Indian shraddha and Samvatsarikam merge?

Some families do a simplified combined observance. Discuss both parents’ traditions on WhatsApp before the day.

Who should perform tarpan?

Usually the eldest son or appointed kartā per custom. The pandit guides eligibility if no son is present.

Is cooking allowed in the house the same day?

Rules vary. Many families cook only after the ritual; confirm fasting and kitchen use with the pandit.

Do we need two pandits for Brahmin bhojan?

One pandit can lead; some families invite additional scholars to eat the ceremonial meal. Arrange count early.

What if the tithi falls at night?

Timing follows the tithi window, not only clock time. Share horoscope or panchang note from your astrologer.

Can this be done in a Bengaluru apartment?

Yes in the home shrine area or community hall. No street address or hall booking is arranged by this site.

How far in advance should we book Samvatsarikam – First Year Ceremony – Brahmins?

Message preferred dates and your Bengaluru area on WhatsApp. Shravan, Navaratri, and wedding seasons fill quickly; the pandit shares fee and samagri after scope is clear.
