Roka Ceremony

रोका समारोह

The rite

Roka is the North Indian pre-wedding step where both families formally bless the couple’s engagement and announce the alliance to close relatives. It is usually held at the bride’s or groom’s home with a small havan or puja, exchange of sweets and gifts, and elders giving their ashirwad. Families in Bengaluru often schedule Roka before fixing the wedding date so that muhurat and guest lists can be planned with clarity. Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma conducts the Vedic portion at your residence within the usual visit area around the city.

Time at the house: 1.5–2.5 hours depending on havan length and family speeches

Pandit Mrityunjay Sharma does this at the house in Bengaluru. The fee is not printed on this page. It is sent on WhatsApp with the material list.

Why families book it

You may book Roka when the match is agreed but you want the union marked in a traditional way before larger wedding functions begin. It gives grandparents and parents a clear moment to bless the couple and to involve both sides without the scale of a full wedding.

The ceremony is devotional and social; it does not replace legal marriage registration or predict how married life will unfold. The pandit explains each step in plain language so guests who are not familiar with Punjabi or Hindi rituals can follow respectfully.

When families ask

  • After the families agree on the alliance and before the wedding date is fixed
  • When you want elders to bless the engagement at home with a short Vedic order
  • Before sagai or ring ceremony if those are planned separately
  • On a weekday or weekend muhurat chosen with the pandit on WhatsApp

Short vidhi

  1. Ganesh and Gauri invocation and sankalp naming both families and the couple
  2. Kalash sthapana and lighting the lamp for the Roka thali
  3. Short havan with ghee and samagri while mantras for harmony and auspicious beginnings are chanted
  4. Blessing the couple with rice and flowers from elders after the fire offerings
  5. Exchange of fruits, sweets, dry fruits, or gifts as per family custom
  6. Applying tilak or chunni / scarf to the bride and groom as elders direct
  7. Aashirwad from both families seated for the final arati
  8. Prasad distribution and photo moment before the havan area is closed

The pandit confirms the order on WhatsApp before the visit.

Questions

Is Roka the same as engagement or sagai?

Many families use Roka as the first formal blessing; sagai or ring ceremony may follow later. The pandit adjusts the vidhi to what you have already done or plan next.

Can Roka be done at the groom’s house instead of the bride’s?

Yes. The order of hosting is a family choice. The ritual elements stay the same; only seating and gift exchange customs may change.

Do we need a full wedding-scale havan for Roka?

Usually a shorter havan or puja is enough. Mrityunjay Sharma confirms the depth when you share guest count and time window on WhatsApp.

Which deities are worshipped at Roka?

Ganesh and Gauri are common, with mantras for auspicious beginnings. Some families add a brief Lakshmi–Narayan or Ishta devata remembrance as guided by the pandit.

How many people can attend at a Bengaluru apartment?

A cleared living room or society clubhouse works if fire rules allow havan. Share layout photos and ventilation so the pandit can advise on kund placement.

What should the couple wear?

Traditional festive dress is usual. Avoid heavily embroidered outfits near the havan if sparks are a concern; families often change after the fire portion.

Is the material list the same as for a wedding havan?

No. Roka uses a smaller samagri set. You receive a tailored list on WhatsApp after you confirm date and whether havan will be indoors or on the terrace.
